Honestly, I'm not sure why I'm writing this. I guess maybe it'll help you decide on whether or not you wanna do this professionally or casually. So I guess the main reason I became a bartender is... I turned 21! I wanted to explore alcohol mixing, beer pouring, etc. I've had a strange fascination with alcohol ever since I had a cup of mead for my 16th birthday. It wasn't really out of a desire to learn how to get drunk, to be frank. I don't actually like being drunk, but by no means does anyone have to drink until that point.

Honestly, after I got my BASSET license (Required by my county to be a bartender), I was pretty nervous at first. I mean, there are all these legal implications, you have to memorize a lot, keep tabs on what's going on around you, etc. And it's ok to be nervous! Bartending has a different environment than being a chef or a fry cook. It may be in the same industry, but it's quite different from everything else. It's not an exact science like baking is, nor is it quite the daily grind that fast food is.

Frankly, I find mixology enjoyable because it's not an exact science. You can add stuff, remove things, substitute one thing for another and see if it works. Not everything you and I make or come up with will work, but not everything is trial and error. A lot of it is memorizing flavors as well. Come to think of it, a LOT of mixology involves memorization. If that's not your thing, then chances are you'll want to keep it casual.

goodness me that was a lot of rambling, I'm really sorry guys. Alright, with all that aside, here's a brief list on what's typically expected of a bartender in the US. Keep in mind that these expectations are for standard bars at restaurants, entertainment venues, and maybe some ma and pa bars. Things are subject to change depending on where you work!

Be Approachable:

This is simple enough. You've gotta be presentable, like Ryan Reynolds in a bathing suit. Ok, maybe not like that, but having a scowl or looking like you're miserable won't do you any favors!

Comforting:

I think this falls in the same camp as being approachable. I can't really explain this. I guess it just boils down to making people feel comfortable around you. How you go about this will depend on where you work. A country bar is much different than a sports bar ( ̄□ ̄」)
Just remember that this ain't your Grandma's sarsaparilla!

Knowledgeable:

This one takes a lot, but it can be trained! Being knowledgeable on drinks lets you chat up your patrons and help them learn more. Even as a brand new bartender, you already know more about drinks than the average person. But never stop researching like a college kid who's had too much redbull! Who knows, maybe it'll net you a larger tip if the patron was genuinely interested?

Good Memory:

This one boils down to practice, really. You gotta memorize recipes. Fortunately this is the fun part, since practicing at home is just as viable as practicing at work!

Situational Awareness:

This one's a bit tricky to give advice on. Simply put, if you have a hard time keeping tabs on what's happening around you, chances are you'll struggle to be a bartender. You have to gauge how many drinks people have had, how intoxicated they may actually be (tolerance doesn't actually slow intoxication, just makes it easier to hide!), and obviously keep a decent watch on someone's drink if they decide to get up and go somewhere else for a bit.

You also have to judge the mood a patron may be in. If they aren't in a good mood or don't feel like chatting, just leave it and get them what they want really. If they're being chatty, feel free to talk and socialize. This helps with gauging intoxication, too.

Otherwise, have fun! It's one of the few service jobs that I feel can be really enjoyable for you and the people you're serving.

10/12/2021, 3:50 am

Tonight's just a bunch of behind the scenes stuff. Cleaning up the code finally, moving things over to style.css to remove some stuff, moving images into their own folders, and of course beginning to set up the various cocktail pages. I'm gonna try to make it as intuitive as possible, I don't want people to have to navigate a maze of links, but there's some stuff that just overlaps. I'll think about how I wanna set that up a bit more in the coming weeks though

Midterms still aren't over though. My biology midterm started yesterday and is due Friday, but I should have it done by then. Provided I can get through the workloads on my other classes, I should be able to dedicate a bit more time to the site. I know I know, I keep saying that. Honestly, I'm not sure why I have this part of the site marked public. Maybe it's so other people can see my plans and get some insight into how a beginner HTML coder thinks. I'm not sure.

What I am sure of, however, is that I just use this as a rambling corner to get all my thoughts somewhere. It's been surprisingly helpful so far, I won't lie. Maybe a word document or changelog would've worked better, but I'm not a fan of formal stuff like that. I don't wanna be an adult, I wanna be myself!

10/3/2021, 7:57 pm

Hrm, it's been a few days since I last worked on the site. This can be chalked up to laziness, frankly. I got my workload done early every day, but simply couldn't find the motivation to even add a new recipe.

Found some motivation to do it today though. To be frank, I really should add multiply pages for recipes. My plan is to have one central page with its own navbar for different types of recipes. Sour, tropical, fruity, strong, manly, high class, etc

I'll hammer out the specifics later, as I only have 4 recipes listed at the moment. I have to start making lighter recipes too, things that take less ingredients to make. As good as things like the Freebooter's Merriment are, not everyone is going to be able to afford 8 fuckin ingredients for 1 cocktail. I'm really sorry about that, I should've considered it sooner. I feel like shit.

Either way, I've added that to the to-do list as well. See you all later

9/29/2021, 8:48 pm

Today's been exhausting. College transfers, testing new recipe ideas, changing my degree, and studying for 2 exams has left me with no time to work on the site today.

That's fine though, you have to pace yourself with this or else you'll get burned out. I'd hate to leave this page here, forgotten until I suddenly remember it 3 years later or something. If I ever leave this site, it'll be because I consider it "done," and that won't happen for a fairly long time.

Fortunately, I found time today to overhaul the credits section. And with that, the first presentable version of my site is done!

Tomorrow's a new day, though I suspect I won't have that much time to work on the site again, either. My 8 week sociology course will be starting soon, and the workload for that is quite large.

Ah well, I'm sure I'll be able to do stuff still, just not at the same pace I was before.

Catch you all on the flip side!

9/28/2021, 11:26 am

Welcome back to my rambling corner!

I think the overhaul is going well so far. Things are gradually looking like how I envisioned them from the start. It's strange to think it's only been 3 days, it feels like it's been 3 weeks at least.

I can't thank my friend Abishek enough for helping me out with this, he's done a magnificent job in teaching me how to use HTML and CSS.

Once my intended layout is complete and code is cleaned up, I plan to try my hand at making a drink randomizer for the homepage, I'll add more recipes, maybe I'll do a section covering various brands of liquor and what I think about them.

I'm nowhere near rich though, so if I do that it'll be extremely slow and only updated periodically. Maybe I'll start using my allowed 0.5 oz (or equivalent) of hard liquor every shift to taste test some liquors for the site.

I have direction now, though. I have some pretty clear plans and ideas here, I just need to learn enough to implement them. Additionally, I'd like to try making a guestbook some day, though finding resources for that has proven difficult.

There's also this very unique, layered double shot I've been looking to make, but every time I try making it, it ends up looking like apple juice (╥﹏╥). I need more practice, but when it's done I'll showcase it on the homepage!

Alright day 2!

I've got a lot planned for today but it'll mostly be behind the scenes stuff.

For example, I'm finally gonna get rid of the lists plaguing the alignment on the equipment and recipe pages.

Though I'll also be dividing things into more classes so I can easily use CSS styling for certain things.

Other than that, gonna sit down after all my studies today and spend a lot more time on the site!

I hope some folks at least find this little corner of the internet cool.

It's simple so far, but I hope to make it more flashy and totally righteous over time.

ok finally made my own button, even though there are more important things i should be doing.

I really hope this goes well. I have a collective 6 hours of HTML experience so far, and I probably should've studied instead.

Official Essentials:

Cocktail Shaker

Probably the best cocktail shaker is the boston style shaker. It's easy to use, can be used to stir and shake, and easily fits a bar strainer.

There's also the Cobbler shaker. This one comes with a built in strainer, but they tend to be sticky after getting cold and don't hold as much liquor as a boston style shaker. I've spilt more than my fair share of cocktails with these, so be warned.

I guess it depends on what you, personally, want to go with.

Jigger

Out of all the equipment here, the jigger is the only MUST have, even for home use. Accurate measurements will go a really long way in making sure your cocktails taste as they should! Personally, I recommend getting one jigger that has multiple measurement lines inside of it, especially if you're using it at home.

Bar Strainer

This is only really necessary if you intend to use a Boston style shaker. They're used to strain cocktails so ice and pulp don't end up in your drink.

Bar Spoon

Used to mix and layer drinks, really. They're long, so they can fit in tall glasses or shakers. Unless you wanna make some really fancy cocktails though, you'll probably only use this to stir.

Muddler

BAM BAM BAMMMMM ME SMAAASH!

Sorry, had to get that outta my system.

Muddlers are used to mash various fruits, herbs, and spices at the bottom of a glass. The most famous drink that requires a muddler is the Mojito, as you have to muddle the mint.

Corkscrew

If you already drink wine, then chances are you have a corkscrew. It's not really necessary unless you plan to open bottles that have a cork inside.

<marquee>IMPORTANT: Don't poke a hole through the cork if unless you intend to drink the entire bottle in one night!</marquee>

Cutting Board & Knives

You probably already have this. You'll just need it for garnishes and cutting fruit for juicing, really. Pretty easy stuff really.

Zester

The most peculiar item on this list, a zester is used to grate zest from lemons and whatnot. Again, this isn't too necessary. You can totally skip over this unless you care about the pizzazz!

Blender

Chances are you already have this too. It's used in some cocktails, but not all. The most famous example is likely a Pina Colada, which must be blended. Please remember that most recipes must be blended until smooth, I've made some rather chunky cocktails on accident by not blending long enough before, and that isn't too pleasant.

Citrus Reamer

This is just a juicer, really. Some recipes call for fresh juice, which you need to make with a reamer. If you already have a juicer though, you likely won't need this.

Optional:

Cocktail Straws

Basically just a smaller straw used to drink cocktails. You don't really need this, especially if you already take it slow while drinking cocktails. (I highly recommend that btw, some sweet cocktails don't hit you until you've already had about 3 or 4)

Cocktail Toothpicks

Used for garnishing, basically. I've already touched up on this before, hence why it's totally optional. There are also swizzle sticks that fulfill the same function. Although you can get some pretty neat cocktail toothpicks, such as little swords!

I'm quite fond of the cool ones (/// ̄ ̄///)

Swizzle Sticks

Eh, these are mainly used to stir cocktails. Again, this isnt too necessary. However! There do exist flavored swizzle sticks that you can use (usually in the form of rock candy)! So if that's in your interest, go right ahead and get them.

Glasses

Phoo ok. So glasses, yes? These aren't entirely optional, I'm afraid. The reason I'm putting them in the optional section is because there are like 20 different glasses to use. Realistically, you only need a couple, unless you're working at a bar or about to host a really fancy party.

So long as what you have can fit drinks, then you should be alright. Some recipes that require topping might be better with the proper glass though, so keep that in mind.

In the future, I'll add a new page to the site dedicated to different types of glasses!

Welcome to my amateur website on amateur mixology! I'm fairly new to bartending, haven't been 21 for long, but I'm always willing to learn and improve!
Mixology can be quite fascinating, though it can be a little pricey at times. When in doubt, remember that cocktail culture came about during prohibition because people wanted to make their awful liquor taste better! Going for the low shelf stuff can work just as well as the top shelf stuff, if you're just doing this at home

A very sweet and tropical beverage. It hits with you with coconut and pineapple right away, with some citric acid tones in there. Unlike the Che Surprise however, the citric acid is not overpowering this time. There's a slight burn from the rum as well, although the spice and alcoholic taste of rum is masked by the sweeter ingredients. The pineapple taste sticks with you for a few moments after a sip, making this a nice poolside beverage. This is something you'd definitely garnish with an orange wheel and an umbrella. This is another recipe I made from scratch, but I tried my hardest to stick with traditionally Caribbean flavors and motifs!

The Che Surprise is a recipe made by yours truly. It's based off the Cuban Special. While not as famous as the daiquiri or mojito, Cuban Specials have a good place in my pallet as a relatively strong-tasting tropical beverage. However, I decided that I wanted to try something that might be sweeter but still feels like a Cuban Special, so I tossed in a few more ingredients and voila! This is a very sour cocktail with a hint of sweetness and rum. Keep that in mind, if sour is not your thing, then this won't be for you

This is an interesting one! The recipe is based off a drink from a video game called VA11 HALL-A, which may or may not have played a role in me becoming interested in alcohol. It's basically a blue long island, but simplified. It tastes really good though, and it's a nice bubbly drink. It's not too strong, nor is it too sweet, but it is refreshing, and it's possibly my favorite recipe!
Again, I did not make this, SoulbomB did, so all credit goes to him! I mainly wanted to share this because it's an awesome recipe and he's incredibly talented. Please, check out his youtube channel.
